New places excite me. Especially if said place serves amazing desserts – and more so still if they are inexpensive.
Yup. Inexpensive, gorgeous puddings, bagels and drinks (also cocktails!!!!) that won’t force you remortgage your house. That is the actual dream. As a student I could not imagine anything better.
It’s been a heinously long time since an addition to ‘the food series‘ has been posted, but I think this more than makes up for that. Crepes and ace gelato. In Sheffield. I don’t think I’ve been so swoony over a place since Korea.

Gelato Original opened not too long ago – I think around the end of February – and we all know how I get when I see somewhere I really want to try. Knowing nothing of the prices, the dish sizes, the staff, or the quality, we sauntered in with the sun shining. It was practically blessing our choice of lunch, to be honest.
The staff here are super lovely, taking your order with a smile, and attentive to your dining needs. The overall atmosphere was quite quiet, as it’s a new opener, and kind of hidden from the busy pubs of West Street, but there is a function room that I am totally not (read: totally am) scouting out for potential socials and functions. Because what’s better than socials with ice cream and waffles.
I was actually surprised at how extensive the menu was: bagels (new), waffles/crepes, cakes & semifreddo, sundaes, your plain gelato, frozen yoghurt, milkshakes, cocktails, super juices, soft drinks, teas, coffees and hot chocolate.
It made it really hard to choose what to have. We considered bagels, because it would be more ‘lunch appropriate’ than straight up dessert, but scrapped that idea when it provided Even More Choice. So we ‘settled’ for crepes, tea and a caramel latte. Which isn’t even really settling, but boy oh boy were we glad we didn’t have a bagel on top. Portion sizes here are exactly what I like. Nice and generous.
All of the desserts are made with fresh fruit, so there’s none of that slightly syrupy, ‘out of a can’ taste, which is beautifully refreshing when the sun’s out. It made me feel like I could quite easily step outside and be in Italy. Ace.
Prices are also incredibly friendly. Our bill totalled £13, which could be quite extravagant for some, but when you’re only other dessert options are Patisserie Valerie, Baskin Robbins or Tesco’s… it quickly puts into perspective how affordable that is. Maybe not a weekly thing, but certainly a semi-regular treat.
