DUMPTY Spring/Summer 2017 collection

dumpty spring summer 2017 collection review
Trends for next season: wide leg, layers, boxy cuts and 'boyfriend'/oversized silhouettes, fun colours, belts (lots of them), and off-the-shoulder variations. It's a lot of what's currently around, as season to season seems to be less of a colossal shift in trends now ethics and waste are being talked about more, and personal style is a lucrative area.

One brand that absolutely has these spring/summer '17 trends down, while still being so irrevocably true to their own ethos of not aiming to please or educate, but express beauty naturally with a respect to modern architecture and a humbleness to mother nature, is DUMPTY. Off-timetable with Fashion Scout, they showcased a spring/summer collection that was fun, oversized, and unexpected. And I was lucky enough to get to see it thanks to the wonderful Fashionworked

DUMPTY's preference for no heavy machinery in production is apparent in the earthy colour palette, oversized silhouettes and relaxed layering of block coloured separates, as it gives the collection that organic feel. Splashes of blue and yellow broke up the more muted navys, blacks, stones, and greys. Accessories made from rope gave a natural and quirky spin to the tailored pieces, and the 'off the shoulder' trend was exaggerated with contrast trimming, slashed sleeves and point styling.

The recurring motif throughout the collection was the DUMPTY logo; a grinning face in a hand drawn style, or a text rendering, with the placement again nodding to the organic direction of DUMPTY's designers. Wide-leg shorts and trousers featured heavily, with flowing materials that juxtaposed the more traditional silhouettes.

My favourite items of the collection were the bomber jackets with the dropped, oversized sleeves; the contrast  blue/black and pocketed shorts and shift dress; and the oversized sweaters with the contrast cut out shoulders. The striped vertical stripe designs definitely appealed to my love of all things nautical, too.

The collection as a whole is definitely memorable, and as you look closer at the individual pieces the unexpected elements - such as the circular cut outs and one-shoulder detailing - really stand out. It's a cohesive blending of four design minds from two of Britain's great fashion institutions, with stylistic elements drawn from their respective backgrounds.

DUMPTY is an exciting London studio, combining influences from Asia with those of the UK, and I can't wait to see where they go next. You can see the full collection on the DUMPTY website below.
