My New Year's Eve

jones and jones dress cute party dress outfit inspiration

New Year's in my family isn't an extravagant affair. We're very much more a sit-in-our-pj's and play board games family this time of year, since my parent's aren't particularly party people. It's probably a good thing this year, since my little sister and I have quite the colossal amount of work to be doing, and neither of us want tomorrow to be a write off.

But regardless of what I may or may not actually be wearing this evening, New Year's calls for poofy dresses and I'm sort of using it as an excuse to twirl around and imagine the parties I'll host once I've graduated and am trying to find my own two feet.

Favourite Youtube Channels of 2015

FAVOURITE youtube channels

LAST ONE, I PROMISE. That is, unless you enjoy the roundup / recommendation posts, in which case, last one, I'm sorry! Anyway, with New Year's Eve being tomorrow, I thought I'd do a list of my favourite youtube channels of 2015. I've done bloggers/blogs and favourite posts already, so next logical step, really.

Also I see a looot of people asking for new channels to be recommended to them (same, tho), that I find posts like these quite handy to fling around when you can't fit all the @'s into 140 characters. It's not quite a list of 50 like my other round-up posts, but hopefully there are some new channels for you to enjoy :D

Some 2016 goals

2016 new years resolution ideas

2015 has been a pretty good year for me. I've worked with and met some amazing people, I did pretty ace when results for my 3rd year at uni were released, and I'm on track to graduate in July. Woot. So apart from doing more of the same, I thought I'd set a few little goals that I can use as a progress check this time next year. I'm not great at the 'resolutions', so having something that I can work towards over the course of the year rather than just a selection of 'TOTES GONNA DO THIS YEAAHH's is a better strategy for me, I think. If you're the resolution type, let me know what resolutions you're making this year.

My 2015 best

best of 2015 little miss fii uk blogs

T-minus 4 days until we drop some glitter balls, tipsily stumble through the countdown from 10, and land in 2016. Heh. That came around fast, didn't it. We've all said how horrifically quickly 2015 went by (seriously, what was that????) and it kind of does feel like January 1st was a couple of days ago... but here we are.

So I'm using this space to have a look back at my best of 2015 here on the blog, and some of my absolute favourite posts from the girls and guys that I follow. Because tv around this time is usually a bit naff, and you've gotta do something when you zone out 20 minutes into the films... ;)

50 favourite bloggers & 50 favourite blogs

50 favourite bloggers 50 favourite blogs uk blog

This year has been a bit of a rollercoaster - as it is every year to an extent - and I've found I've been wanting to catch up on blogs and youtube channels in my downtime over flicking on the telly and binge-watching music videos (don't judge, I don't have time to invest in a series). I've added to my reading list massively over 2015, thoroughly enjoying all those stolen minutes in between paragraphs of essays catching up on new purchases, recipes and getting inspiration for my own outfits.

Some of these you know already, I try to give as much as I take from the community back, so if you follow me on twitter (doo I'm sort of witty, we can be friends!) then a few definitely will not be a surprise - but I'm still in the festive spirit and all for a proper 2015 roundup... so it's sharesies time.

You'll have probably noticed that there are two lists: 50 favourite bloggers and 50 favourite blogs... just so I can cover as much ground as possible. The bloggers on the 'blogger' list all have amazing blogs too, I just love the person to bits behind the page. I've tried to make sure that there isn't any overlap between the lists, but chances are a few names slipped through the net...

ALL the DRESSES

New Years Eve dress ideas

New. Years. Eve. I'm going absolutely nowhere this year, unless curled up on the sofa with mum and dad, and the prosecco we didn't have at Christmas because we had surprise champers instead, counts. It totally counts. My sofa is very classy. But! If your plans are vastly more exciting than mine, then you might be in the market for a dress. Or an outfit. Possibly one that is reduced.

And since I enjoy procrastinating revision by online-sale-window-shopping, I have a handy lil' dress edit for you. Or for me, but that's a technicality. Featuring the dresses that will turn heads because they're not your standard sparkly-sparkly totes predictable NYE party dresses. You can thank me later <3

Nutmeg Shortbread

easy nutmeg shortbread recipe

I've been trying various shortbread recipes this year, since it's pretty easy to whip up a batch of fresh, buttery goodness (seriously, shortbread is 3 ingredients, guys), trying to find the perfect consistency. And along the way I tried adding a few little extras to flavour - and I think this one is my favourite. Plus it's a lil' bit festive... so if you're seriously struggling for last minute gifts, how 'bout some fresh nutmeg shortbread.

A Party Coordinate

Luxemme Olivie coordinate outfit inspiration

Party season. Christmas into New Year provides ample opportunity to whack out the sparkles and the glitz and the glamour all in the spirit of one fabulous party. Shopping for that ultimate party outfit provides ample opportunity for tears in the changing rooms and a hell of a lot of sighing. Also potentially outfit snapping with that one girl you reaaaaaaaaally didn't want to outfit snap with. I'm as for sequins and glitter as the next gal, but sometimes you just need to tone it back and stop the show with monochrome.

Because monochrome outfits are a tried and tested combination guaranteed to make that awkward dance to not get anything on the white totes worth it. Also, everything always matches. E v e r y t h i n g.

Finally feeling festive

red and gold themed christmas decorations

I never truly feel remotely Christmassy until I'm at home - with the tree up and all our fabulously shiny, slightly tacky decorations strewn 'artfully' across the house. It's just something for me that is so homey and welcoming and thoroughly right, that anywhere else just feels a ... well a lot wrong this close to Christmas.

SEO. The acronym on every domain-owning, internet-savvy person’s lips. It causes much confusion, stress and sometimes heartache in the blogging community, but is a very useful thing to wrap your head around. I've talked about how good SEO practices can help improve your Domain Authority, and glossed over a little of what it is there, but I thought the benefits of learning the ins and outs deserved its own post.

So. SEO: what it is and why you should learn? Call it a SEO training crash course.

Rebel Impressions from a Mac Virgin

Rebel MAC cosmetics lipstick first impressions

I've been incredibly lucky so far this December, I won my first ever MAC cosmetics lipstick from the lovely Jessica (over at making it up, go and have a lil' snoop).  First ever MAC product. Don't judge, I've just never got round to exploring the counter before - it isn't exactly cheap and my priorities have been elsewhere whenever I'm in a Debenhams, and I've not been in a MAC store long enough to shop. I've swatched, but never bought.

So, complete MAC virgin that I am - what do I think of Rebel?

Sugarbaby ballet boppers in noir

sugarbaby ballet boppers noire review

The only Black Friday purchase I made this year was this: the sugarbaby ballet boppers in noir. Via Dollskill. Reduced from $95 to $45 I sort of had to get them. THEY MAY NEVER BE THAT PRICE AGAIN. Logic. I has much of it. Obviously.

So. To make the newest addition to my 'ridiculously scary, how do you walk in them, when are you going to wear them Fiona???' shoe collection (so sorry, mum), say hi to the twins. Also I haven't seen any reviews of these around so thought I'd fill that gap if you want to get a pair of these yourself. Call me Chief Enabler.

It's a liiiiitle bit worrying how much I love the collection in H&M at the moment. As in, no fair. Please cease and desist with stocking things that I feel I need in my wardrobe. It's painful. Up until last week I had been brilliantly good with the 'not buying things' thing until a little enabler in the form of Chantel / Bonnie Blondie paid a visit. And then a haul happened.

5 super cheap (but super cute) Christmas Decoration Diy's

5 cheap and cute holiday or christmas decoration diys

I love decorating the house for Christmas, have done ever since I was old enough to tear down what mum put up (who needs a cat when you have kids?), and then be plonked in front of brightly coloured sticky paper to make reems and reems ane reeeeeeeems of paper chains. Seriously, we still have paper chains from when I was probably 3 in our Christmas decor box.

But being at Uni makes decorating for Christmas really hard, spare hours this time of year to make it look like you've shoplifted half of Wilko's tinsel stock are hard to come by (feck you, essays), and the extra penny you may have spent on that £2 crochet hanging star are more likely to go on your heating or alcohol. Then there's the hassle of taking it all down when you have to leave, because you really don't want to be that tosser with tinsel in your window come January. All in all, buying decorations can be a bit of a pointless exercise.

If you're like me, though, and love a lil' bit of Christmas in the home, then you're going to love these 5 super cheap and super cute DIY's I've found for ya.

Sooo I might have started watching Scream Queens. I'm late to the party, I know, I know, but uniiiiii. I'm not fully caught up but I'm on episode 9 and so far my favourite thing is the wardrobe departments styling choices. Bet none of you saw that one coming... lolz. I don't think I've ever wanted a wardrobe of pastel faux fur as much as I do at this moment - or a line skirts and white strappy shoes. So I've compiled a lil' collage of my favourite Scream Queen style steals that are def more affordable than anything they're wearing on the show.

Unfortunately I don't have the limitless bank account of a KKT.

I am sad. Chantel has buggered off back to cross the border and the post-concert blues has set in strong. Yesterday (so, the 7th Dec), I ran off to Manchester to go and battle my way to the barrier so I could see my favourite of favourite bands in all their screamy shouty rock gloriousness. And it was brilliant. It was, by far, my absolute favourite night of the year.

And I've waited nearly 10 years to see One Ok Rock live. I've waited 12 to see their vocalist in concert. I am so emotional right now.

There are some spots in Sheffield that are fab. Like seriously fab. The Steam Yard is definitely one of them. It's kitschy and homey and all sorts of wooden rustic that makes me kind of want to live there. Division Street is home to a few of these insta-friendly places (the Lucky Fox is super close), and they're the perfect stop on a cold, super windy day when you're up to your armpits in wallpaper samples.

I have trouble in winter with really dry skin - I think we all do, to some extent, yes? - and sometimes finding an oil or a body butter that really, truly nourishes is hard. Especially if you have any number of other skin complaints (hey there eczema). And no one likes feeling as greasy as that takeout you definitely didn't have last night, amirite?

So when Acuregen asked if I'd maybe like to try one of their new body oils, I thought why not? My skin could use it.

(And tbh, yours might too.)

The Perfect Party Look for this Holiday Season

farfetch perfect party look holiday seasons outfit styling ideas

The best party looks for this time of year, to me, are those that create a statement. Whether that statement is 'I AM THE GLITTER BALL/ you're so on trend everyone else might as well just go home, you've won this season/this outfit makes me look da bomb ting and everyone will be talking about it until well into the new year', the key to any perfect look is confidence.

Though it really doesn't hurt to have some absolutely killer threads in your wardrobe to help. I mean, if I was wearing a Giambattista Valli or Zuhair Murad dress to any of the formal events this year, I'd be pretty damn confident.

So, my perfect party look for this holiday season? Given free range of the Farfetch website presented an unholy amount of choice, but I managed to narrow it down to one look that I think is pretty recreateable - whatever your budget - and still keeps that lil' summin' summin' you get with designer outfits.

How to order Good Quality things from China or Asia

how to order good quality clothing from asia

If I had a pound for every time I heard someone say that 'everything from China is shit quality' I'd be immensely rich. So rich, in fact, I would probably be able to buy China. (Ish. Don't quote me on that.) It's kind of frustrating, seeing as many of the brands we know and love in the west are, well, actually made in China, or the far east, and there are a lot of fab brands that don't get the recognition (I think) they deserve because they're Asia based.

And by Asia based brands, I don't mean Romwe and Choies etc, I mean actual brands like mixxmix and dabagirl and those that have legitimate stores you can wander into. I may have actually been to a bunch of the stores. I might be missing them.

So. If you're ordering from China, or Asia, and you don't want the bad quality stuff, or to be seriously disappointed how do you avoid it?

When it rains it pours: how to keep going when everything is shit

I've had one of the worst weeks for a very long time. Cue all the stress and duvet cocoons because lol no it's also been raining all week and that really doesn't help. Why can't my reading week be calm and filled only with uni work.

Because life can be a massive bellend, often.

But this week, and last, actually, got me thinking about the fact that, well, while this week has been terribad, it's not the worst I've been through, and I had to give myself a little pep talk with 'we made it through that so we'll make it through this by following the same steps'.

Sushi Express - Sheffield

want to know where to get the best sushi in sheffield? you too can enjoy this wonderful maki if you head to sushi express

Sushi Express is, by far, my favourite place to get Japanese food in Sheffield. I don't even really care that it's Chinese run, the taste is probably the most authentic I've had outside of Asia. Turn your nose up all you like, I have never had a bad experience, and every time I go to eat here I leave feeling happy and dangerously close to a food coma.

It's also the first place I suggest when someone says that they don't know if they'd like Japanese food, or the last time they had sushi it was bad. Chances are, the only previous experience has been Yo! Sushi, and Yo is probably the worst place to go for sushi ever.

Sushi Express is worlds apart in comparison.

THE CAKE IS A LIE: Fakery in the world of Social Media

talking about all things fake in social media

Breaking news: the social media industry is heavily curated and not all things are #goals. In other news: grass is green.

It's been a while since I've done an 'opinion piece', so here, have some opinions. I'll also turn the sarcasm off for a second.

I do feel incredibly sorry for what has happened to Essena Oneill, and how her experiences have driven her to remove herself from social media. I mean I've never heard of her before this but hey, I empathise, I do. Really. Body image issues are horrific to deal with, and finding self worth in how others view you is not a path that generally leads to happiness. It's shitty that there are a lot of people out there who enjoy exploiting insecurities to make dollah, but there are a lot of shit people in the world. Props to her for removing herself from the thing causing her so much grief.

No props to her for throwing the rest of us under a bus in the process.

But!!!!! I hit 600 followers on instagram recently and thought that I'd do a bit of an 'intsa-style' kind of post. A lot of the outfits I wear day to day don't get to feature much on the blog because 1) my phone camera is actually crap and I like having pretty decent quality images on this space and 2) faffing around with the tripod and timer and things when I should've been out of the door 3 minutes ago does not for pretty outfits make.

I do love a good, simple outfit. I think Korea sort of placed the great appreciation for clean lines and single colour outfits as a base in me, and I've taken that on in all of my lazy-but-want-t-have-a-decent-outfit days. All black is obviously a super chic favourite, but I definitely have a soft spot for the all white or soft pastel outfits with a grounding colour.

And by 'grounding colour' I mean 'any excuse to throw on a denim jacket'.

A Toner, an Emulsion, and great skin

IASO korean skincare brand - review of their purifying toner and purifying emulsion

Korea taught me many things, but I never truly got on board with the 11-step skincare regime. Mostly because I am lazy, but also because toners, emulsions and moisturisors tend to make my skin do funky things. And by funky, I mean anywhere from woooo new spots wooo to hideous, hideous flaky reactions. Sensitive skin problems, amirite?

But now that I'm getting older (go on, laugh. Laugh at me), I'm learning that perhaps the super cheap base products aren't the ones, and I won't touch off-the-shelf  skincare with a 10 foot barge pole. Your skin needs to be invested in. It's not great to keep throwing super cheap, easily produced chemicals at it, and I wish 14-16 year old me had understood that. It's been a battle to get things even remotely good, and then in the last two weeks it's like everything has suddenly clicked into place and my skin is ace.

And I've narrowed it down to the fact that, oh hey, I have a routine now. An actual skincare regime that doesn't necessarily have 11 steps, but it has all the necessary bits, including a Toner* and an Emulsion*. And they don't break me out. Score.

Today I'm Nakd.

looking for a healthy cereal bar to try that contains no added sugar, minimal, all natural ingredients and is dairy, wheat and gluten free? Then I might just have the answer for you...

I'm not the world's best person at remembering when meal times should be, despite the fact that I am usually hungry most of the day, because hey there fast metabolism. Couple that with not liking to eat large portions, and you have basically 'little and often' down to a tee. When I was younger, mum and dad tried to combat this with the likes of cereal bars and trail mix to see me through from breakfast to lunch to home time in school, but holy hell do they contain a lot of rather unnecessary ingredients and a fuck tonne of sugar.

So when Natural Balance Foods got in touch asking if I'd like to try some Nakd bars out, I was intrigued, to say the least. Unsure I'd like them, but willing to give them a go, I accepted, since healthy cereal bars have been on my 'list of things to try' for quite a while.

Verdict?

How to save money as a student

how to save money as a student

I know the pain of the week after that shopping-centre student lock-in, the one where everyone goes and spends probably the entirety of their student loan in Topshop or (as I watched one girl in my first year) Armani Exchange. It leaves you feeling a little bit, um, reckless, nervous, wondering how you're going to feed yourself for the next 4 months, right?

All is not lost, though. There are a few pretty ace, totally legit ways you can actually save (and even earn) money as a student. Better still, they're not exactly asking you to get up at 8am on your one day off, and also don't require you to put yourself on a spending ban. Sure they're not as regular as if you were given contracted hours, but an extra £30 here or there, or a random fiver appearing is still quite nice.

Did I mention they were totally legit?

I scream at myself, write it in my diary, on my calendar, that napkin over there because god almighty I actually need to stray a little further than the IC roundabout and big Tesco's. Final year and I've barely seen this city because one too many corp's during freshers was the Thing To Be Doing.

My goal this year (along with getting a first, putting on successful events, being all the social, moving my blog on, upping my youtube game) is to see more of this city that has been my home for two years - Korea stole me for one - and actually be able to respond when someone asks me for recommendations. And what do I do when I go exploring? I grab Sian and we make a cute time out of it.

So we went for tea and cake at Andrews Cafe Tea Rooms. Because somehow I've never been before.

10 Bloggers I actually adore

10 bloggers you should be following

I don't think I've ever been part of a community that is so immeasurably positive and supportive - other than my family. With few exceptions, my days since starting this blog have been filled with happiness (shush this is going to get real sappy) and conversations with people that I genuinely enjoy talking to, without feeling like I should be this or that because of x, y, z. It's immensely freeing, when you've grown up with people stomping all over you.

Obvs there's still that spine chilling fear when you meet your internet friends irl that they're going to hate you or find you so incredibly awkward that that friendship is now dead as dead can be, but I haven't had that happen (yet). And those bloggers that I have met in person have actually exceeded my original opinions of them by being even more entirely and endlessly lovely.

So here are 10 bloggers that I absolutely adore. And I'm not saying that you should go and proclaim your undying love to them immediately, but perhaps check 'em out and give 'em a follow. Or a comment.

Puriskin cosmetics, acuRegen & breast cancer awareness

ACUREGEN cosmetics puriskin resurfacing formula white blog flatlay

You can take a minute to read the title, don't worry, I'm not gonna rush you, it's a bit of a mouthful.

But! Fashion Week brings many an event to London, which is great if you're caught between shows and have an hour or two (or seven) to kill. One such event was the #AvantPremier showrooms, a collection of presentations from some very gorgeous, very high end boutique brands. One of which was acuRegen/Puriskin

currently in my ASOS basket...

asos wishlist header

Raise your hand if you feel personally victimised by the AW lines in ASOS right now  - and by 'personally victimised' I mean: please take all my money because I want it all.

All. Of. It.

It's bad, really. Terrible. One wrong move,  one too many vodka cranberry's on a social and an easily accessible laptop when I get home added to limited rational and I'm pretty much qualifying for free next day delivery.

So here's a select view at my ASOS basket because (showing you all of it will be admitting I Have A Problem, and no, shush, I do not that is entirely you) suffering is best done in groups.

New In: Sheetmasks

what sheetmasks to buy

Changing up my day to day routine and settling into a new one always makes my skin seem to go a little bit naff. Sucks when the largest changes - like, oh, um, moving back to uni - come at a time when I'd prefer my skin to be as ace as it was mid summer. Life tho, right?

I think everyone and their nan knows that when stuff starts heading south for my skin, I run for the sheet masks, and I was super duper happy that when Mati came to visit in September, she'd brought me some from Korea. Actual babe, since it's harder for me to get some of my favourite sheet masks that were stocked in Olive Young. I was also gifted two packs from the lovely people at Timeless Truth when we went to the Bloggers Hangout Bloggers Love Fashion Week event that same week. I've been so excited to try them and see how they compare to the formulation of the Korean brands, so stay tuned for that!

LUSH - avocado co-wash

wanting to try the avacado co-wash lush brought out but are a bit unsure? read my thoughts here...

What do you do when you (brilliantly) forget to bring shampoo of all things to uni? You bite the bullet and go down to Lush to see what they have in their slightly-overwhelmingly large hair-care collection. And ask about things.

It's not something that I've talked about on the blog, because there are countless other people who are better informed than me, and generally a lot more comfortable talking about it, but I suffer from a form of trichotillomania - yes that hair-pulling compulsion. It's become a lot better over the years, but I've put my scalp through an actual awful amount and once I read Lace and Whimsy's blog post on her current hair-care routine, I felt like I absolutely had to try Lush.

So when I was recently down in London, I popped into the Oxford Street branch and asked some q's, deciding that as my hair is also not in the best condition, I should probably give the avocado co-wash a go.

It makes my bathroom smell divine.

Bill's, though

bills london brewer street restaurant review

The only good thing about LFW being held at Brewer St. car park (because let's be real, it still smelled of paint), was the fact that it was adjacent to Bill's. I don't know whether that was advanced planning - get all the fashionable people close to this super swish, bloggers' fave of an establishment - or an incredibly happy coincidinc. Whatever, it would've been totes rude to not see what all this fuss is about.

Plus: pink lemonade, the promise of fish finger sandwiches and a hefty dose of  'well you like food? Bill's it is!' from the ever lovely Hannah - loveiconfantasyego, go check her out - and I was a pretty happy camper for my first, second, and third Bill's visit.

Well it was right there.
